The origin of the Great Sphinx of Giza, one of the most iconic symbols of ancient Egypt, is still a subject of debate among archaeologists and historians. However, it is widely believed to have been built during the reign of the pharaoh Khafre, who ruled during the Old Kingdom period of ancient Egypt's history, around 2500 BCE.
The Great Sphinx is carved out of a single limestone block and represents a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human, believed to be a depiction of the pharaoh himself. It stands on the Giza Plateau near the pyramids of Giza, just outside Cairo, Egypt.
The purpose of the Sphinx remains a mystery, as there are no inscriptions or written records from the time of its construction to provide definitive answers. Some theories suggest that it served as a guardian figure, protecting the pyramids and the pharaoh's burial site. Others propose a symbolic or religious significance, possibly tied to the sun god Ra or the concept of divine kingship in ancient Egyptian belief.
